Installing a stairlift in your home

To continue living at home safely, it is essential to design your home in the most suitable way possible; the stairlift is a key ingredient.
A stairlift in your home

Why install a stairlift in your home?

First of all, what is a stairlift? A stairlift is an important piece of equipment for home maintenance. It is a device that consists of rails on which a mobile chair is placed. Thanks to the electrical system and the control, you can go up and down the stairs effortlessly, just by sitting on the seat.

The stairlift has many advantages. It allows seniors and handicapped people to move independently and longer on the stairs. This device is very easy to use. It is discreet, less cumbersome, ensures optimal safety and comfort and provides peace of mind. Its installation strongly reduces the risks of accidents and falls.

How to choose and install a stairlift?

This device will be installed on an existing staircase. First, the condition of the staircase should be checked if it can support the installation of a new equipment. If not, renovations should be made. Secondly, the width of the stairlift must also be taken into account. The intervention of a professional is highly recommended to offer more safety to the installation, whatever the model chosen.

The different models of stairlifts

Here is some information to help you choose the right model for your needs.

The straight stairlift

The straight stairlift is suitable for straight staircases, without turns or curves. It is less expensive than the various rotating models. It can rotate up to 90° to start the descent of the staircase with ease and safety.

The rotating or curved stairlift

This model is easy to use and its installation is quick. It is dedicated to buildings with one or more floors and designed for a home with one or more intermediate landings.

The spiral stairlift

Although the staircase has many landings and turns, the spiral stairlift is made to follow its many curves completely. The seat is equipped with a harness, which offers the user optimal safety. The user can comfortably use this type of stairlift thanks to its footrest.

The mini elevator

This mini elevator is designed for one floor. It is very compact, its pause is fast and does not require a supporting wall. It can carry two to three people and their luggage on each trip. It is less cumbersome and takes up very little space in the house.

The stairlift chair

This cozy chair is otherwise called a lift chair. It is elegant and very comfortable. Just choose the color and range you prefer so that it fits harmoniously in your home. This device is equipped with a safety belt that fits all sizes. It is suitable for all staircases and operates either on battery or on the mains. It can be moved, even in case of power failure. The European standards foresee a locking of the chair, immediately after its start-up, as well as an emergency stop to avoid possible falls.

How much does a stairlift cost?

Investing in a stairlift is a relevant solution for home maintenance. The price and installation costs depend on the configuration of the staircase and the numerous options specific to each model. For example, a straight stairlift costs between 2,500 and 5,000 euros, a rotating stairlift costs between 6,000 and 12,000 euros and an external stairlift costs between 4,000 and 12,000 euros. It turns out that the installation of this type of device is not trivial. So what can you do to enjoy a little comfort at home when you are elderly?

Financial aid available

The cost of the stairlift and its installation is not covered by the Social Security system, but is covered by the State and local authorities. This is why the APA or personalized autonomy allowance has been set up to help people stay at home, with a monthly ceiling that depends on the level of loss of autonomy (GIR), for example 746.54€ for GIR 4.

The Agence Nationale de l'Habitat or Anah also offers assistance to people with a loss of autonomy to finance their renovation work. For people with modest and very modest incomes, the financing can go up to 35% and 50% of the amount of the work excluding taxes respectively. In the same vein, your pension fund can also offer assistance in financing the installation of your stairlift, up to 2,500€.

In addition to financial aid, there are loans available to seniors such as the CAF loan. Its interest rate is 1%, but it only partially covers the cost of installing a stairlift (amount limited to 1,067 euros).

Financing a stairlift with Dillan

Due to the high cost of installing a stairlift, financial aid and the CAF loan do not always cover the majority of the project costs. For their part, financial institutions often refuse to grant consumer loans to senior citizens. At Dillan, we are concerned with improving the living conditions of senior citizens at home, by offering flexible solutions that allow them to access the liquid assets locked up in their property.

With Dillan, a senior homeowner can sell part of his property and in exchange, he receives the capital amount directly in order to use it to finance, among other things, the installation of the stairlift.
